Another strong step forward for newborn care in Vietnam took place this week at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NHOG), Hanoi. The Newborn Life Support (NLS) course was opened by NHOG Vice Director, Dr Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, who shared an inspiring message: “We hope that the knowledge and skills learned from the NLS course will become the foundation for each student to become an ‘extended arm’ of the healthcare system – together protecting the health and lives of newborns.”
The course welcomed 48 doctors, nurses and midwives from 13 hospitals across Vietnam and achieved excellent results, with high marks in the final assessments. Led by Dr Dang Tuan Anh, this marks his fifth course as an NLS Course Director certified by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), demonstrating the growing strength of Vietnamese-led training. This transition from UK-led to nationally led courses is a key milestone in developing sustainable, high-quality neonatal resuscitation education in Vietnam. Every two years, the ERC re-validates NLS course centres to ensure international standards are upheld. This week, we were honoured to welcome Dr John Madar, Education Chair of the ERC NLS Science & Education Committee, who visited NHOG to support the faculty and lead the centre’s biannual quality review.
A proud moment came as Dr Madar presented the ERC NLS Course Director certificate to Dr Dang Tuan Anh, recognising his leadership and commitment. Congratulations also to the three new ERC-certified instructors who completed their training, another important step in building a strong national instructor network. Together, we are building the future of newborn care in Vietnam, one course, one hospital, and one healthcare professional at a time.
