Dr. Chris Day, a renowned UK consultant neonatologist with over 40 years of experience, has dedicated his life to saving thousands of preterm and sick babies. Since 2017, he has brought his unwavering commitment and expertise to Vietnam, sharing his knowledge with young Vietnamese doctors.
Dr Chris is the education supervisor for a Quality Improvement (QI) project that is one element of our UK neonatal postgraduate training programme, the project counts for a % of the final examination mark. The QI topic is delayed cord clamping and using plastic bags for preterm babies, both are simple measures.
For babies born prematurely, delaying cord clamping for 30–60 seconds decreases the serious complications of prematurity that can be life-threatening Preterm babies have very thin skin and lose water and heat very quickly after birth. Just putting babies into ordinary plastic bags keeps them warm in the first critical minutes of life and increase their chances of survival.
